Week 1 Summary

September 2, 2012 at 7:34 pm (Web Design)

This week primarily consisted of some much-needed review.  First we discussed web browsers-how they work and some common examples.  Then we reviewed some tips on creating webpages and naming and organizing files.  We read two fundamental articles, A Brief History of Markup and Overview: FTP Frequently Asked Questions.  HTML5 is the most recent version of HTML, which evolved from both the disparity and the later collaboration of the W3C and the WHATWG.  FTP or File Transfer Protocol is a set of standards for transferring files between computers.  It is part of TCP/IP (Transport Control Protocol/Internet Protocol), which is the basic protocol for the internet.  It utilizes two ports, command and data, and can communicate either actively or passively.  Our weekly class lecture was an Overview of WWW.  It began with common terms, re-reviewed browsers and naming conventions, touched on the histories of HTML and CSS and gave a basic outline of website structure.

Our first assignments for the week involved introducing ourselves to the class and our instructor.  Next we purchased the lynda.com subscription pertinent to the course material and viewed the lectures related to the information we covered in our reading and course lecture.  We also reflected on what makes a good vs. bad website and created (or in this case-altered) a weblog to post about our course progress.
